Measuring spoons are volume tools used to measure small, precise quantities of both dry and liquid ingredients. They are sold in nested sets containing graduated sizes (typically 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, and 1/4 teaspoon). Measuring spoons are critical for active baking ingredients such as baking powder, baking soda, yeast, salt, and spices, where minor deviations can ruin the chemistry of the bake. Like dry measuring cups, dry ingredients measured in spoons must be fluffed, scooped, and leveled off flat with a straight edge to ensure accuracy.
When measuring liquids with spoons, ensure the spoon is filled right to the brim without spilling. Higher-quality measuring spoons are made of stainless steel with narrow, rectangular profiles that fit easily into spice jars, preventing spills and ingredient waste.
Using standard soup spoons or coffee spoons from the cutlery drawer. These spoons are not calibrated and hold unpredictable volumes, causing baking recipes to fail.
Standard globally. In Australia, the tablespoon is 20 mL, which is equivalent to 4 teaspoons, unlike the standard 15 mL tablespoon used in the US and UK.

Keep spoons clipped together on their ring so they do not get lost in kitchen drawers. Dry thoroughly after washing.
