Quick conversion

1 Cup chopped walnuts/pecans = 115g (4 oz) • 1 Cup whole almonds = 140g (5 oz) • 1 Cup sliced almonds = 90g (3.2 oz)

Nuts vary in size and shape, making volume measurements highly inconsistent. A cup of whole walnuts contains large air gaps and weighs far less than a cup of chopped walnuts. When recipes list nuts by volume, it is always safer to convert to weight for consistency. On average: 1 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans weighs about 115 grams (4 ounces), while sliced almonds weigh about 90 grams (3.2 ounces).

This variance is because whole nuts leave large pockets of air in a measuring cup. When chopped, they pack tightly, increasing the amount of nut material in the same volume. For high-precision baking (such as nut-based pastries or macarons), weighing your nuts or nut flours prevents moisture and fat imbalances that can cause bakes to become heavy or greasy.

Common mistake

Measuring nuts before chopping when the recipe says '1 cup chopped nuts'. This results in adding fewer nuts because whole nuts take up more volume in the cup.

US vs UK / Metric

Nut flours (like almond meal) are much denser: 1 cup of almond flour weighs about 100-112g depending on grind fineness.

When to use it

Portioning nuts for cookies, tarts, pesto, and cake batters.

Substitution

Swapping nuts of similar oil content (e.g. pecans for walnuts) is generally a 1:1 weight swap.

Storage tip

Store nuts in the freezer in a sealed bag. The high oil content in nuts oxidizes quickly, turning them bitter and rancid if left in a warm pantry.
